Epic Mix mobile design

Are you new to the slopes? Taking a lesson to brush up on some skills? Tip: Don’t forget your phone when you head out to the lift. Here’s why: New this year to Vail Resorts' fourth iteration of its intuitive EpicMix app for your iPhone and Android devices is its EpicMix Academy feature. The latest addition encourages more ages and skill levels in ski school to take part in the social side of skiing and riding.

Since the inception of EpicMix, skiers and riders have been able to track their accomplishments on the mountain through Vail Resorts’ signature technology—embedded in lift tickets and season passes—that transmits the information directly to the app. The idea: Bragging rights if you’re amassing crazy vertical feet or impressive stats on the slopes. But novice ski levels may have had difficulty benefitting from this app…until now. This season, for the first time ever, recruits at the ski schools of any of the 10 Vail-owned resorts will be able to share their class-specific achievements with friends and family. Students can compete with each other by earning and showing off digital pins for completing challenges incorporated into their classes.

Each achievement—for instance, earning the “Pizza Pie” digital pin at Heavenly for riding the Big Easy lift five times in a row, or the “Snow Elf” pin for visiting any of the resorts on Christmas—adds points to your total, which provides a bit of friendly, social competition with siblings and companions. EpicMix Academy is a fresh way for any ability level, total novice or seasoned ski vet, to explore the mountain, ride a lift for the first time, or test limits by reaching higher summits. With the power to chart your development all the way back to the first day of ski school, who knows what sort of distinguished ski career you can develop? Watch out, Lindsey Vonn.
